Can anyone please suggest a source for the following:-

1. Battery boxes, or even ordinary plastic boxes, for 165AH (ie big ones) batteries. Have just acquired a new (very second hand) boat well equiped with batteries but no boxes and it's a steel hull! Size 52cm x 22 cm.

2. I want to leave the ventilator in the heads on for about 10 minutes after switching off. Same as standard domestic loo vent. Any ideas how to go about this or where to obtain a delay relay?

Many thanks in advance

You'll be lucky to find proprietary battery boxes to take 165Ah batteries, and you would be well-advised not to use ordinary plastic boxes for something so heavy. Easiest and cheapest solution would be to make your own with plywood and epoxy. Make them slightly oversize (in all 3 dimensions), so that you have the flexibility to install a different make of battery when they need replacing. Be sure you have a means of securing the batteries really well.

As others have suggested, Maplins have cheap timer circuits. I built one from a Maplin kit to control the vent fan on my boat, and it works fine.

2. Why not a time delay, push button light switch. Its pneumatic and costs about £12 (screwfix). OK, its an ac switch and use on dc might shorten its life, but a syou are not switching masive amps I think it would serve you well.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Enough to work on.

I had thought of the push button timer which would have avoided me having to think of complicated electronics but it is only on for a limited time from the time you switch it on rather than when you switch it off. I don't think I can rely on guests pushing the button when they leave the loo.

Thanks to all.

You can probably build up some wood boxes and line them with fibreglas, then put nice handles on for lifting and a sturdy cover able to be strapped down tight, for a lot less than a commercial plastic box. I also built a little wheeled wooden dolly to get those heavy custom boxes off the boat and into winter storage.
