Hello friends !

I Have three batteries : two batteries as house / starter and a separate generator starter battery . This is connected to a main switch ( batt 1 , batt 2 , both ,off ) and fed via two positive outlets of the charger .

The genset battery is fed from battery 1 with a diode to prevent backflow of current . The idea is : if you are on the hook and drain both batteries you can at least start the genny and recharge the main batteries.

i want to change this and run a third outlet from the charger directly to its battery instead of doing it via a main battery .

my question : is it acceptable to generally connect the battery charger directly to the battery or should it be connected to the main switch only ? .

Thanks much !

It would be usual to connect the charger to each of the batteries, either directly to the batteries or to the battery terminals of the isolator switch, this way the batteries stay on charge when you turn the isolator off and leave the boat. Any connections made to the batteries should be fuse, as close to the batteries as possible.

Will a battery charger connected directly to the batteries drain them when switched off ?

Does your battery charger have three outlets?
