My Swift 18 came with fuel tank for outboard and battery in Port aft locker and gas in the Starbd aft locker.

When I connect the battery I whince a little, the plastic outboard tank doesn't breath as far as I know.

Am I being paronoid or does common sense dictate that I move the fuel tank in with the gas canister seperate from the battery?

Prudence says separate or isolate the petrol from potential ignition source as far as possible. The plastic tank does breathe through the screw down vent breather on the filler cap, and connecting/disconnecting the tank around the battery is not a wonderful idea. Can you mount the battery in a locker down below?

Have a look at the boat safety website, your search engine will find it. In short, gas and fuel should be in separate containers built to a British Standard above the waterline and vented from the bottom overboard. The battery should be secured firmly and have a cover and be ventelated. Saves a lot of grief. I have friends who have been badly burned in boat fires so it really does make sense to get it right.

Regards.

Alan.

Why not fit a blower to the locker, like most vessels with inboard engines and fuel tanks in close proximity have?
