Hi

Does anyone know of a cheap place to get leisure batteries?

i am based around m4 area and solent

Regards

Stephen

...From suppliers to the truck industry.

Most big trucks have sleeping cabins at the back of the cab, and their power consumption and time between recharges is pretty similar to a yacht.

Just make sure you specify a Leisure/deep cycle battery, and not an engine start battery

Stephen, the last time I needed leisure batteries I went to my local (independent) tyre/battery/exhaust place gave him the specifications and he got them for me, we did a deal, he added 10% to cost price for his troubles and I ended up saving about 40% on the regular price.

Hi Ya

Stephen,

Do you have a Camping & General Store near you ? they have deep cycle batteries for boats & caravans, well worth a look.

This is free advise no CHARGE!

See Ya

And mine from Halfords and still going strong 4 years on - but I don't start the engine with them and they do get a trickle charge from the solar panel. Now who said they are a good idea? well if you are reading - thanks. And for anybody thinking about fitting a solar panel just do it, no, go on do it this weekend and forever look back with pleasure at not having batteries to charge, take ashore or worry about.

Suggest that you get in touch with Barden Batteries who advertise in the yachting press and are based down your way - in any event they deliver to your doorstep.

They are extremely knowledgeable about batteries for ALL purposes including yachting [the exhibit at the shows] , are good on price and seem to automatically discount their prices.

I buy AC Delco Freedoms and find them to be excellent batteries and Barden sell them at a very good price - probably the cheapest around.

Can't miss the opportunity to suggest that you get an Adverc Alernator controller which is worth every penny on a yacht.

Good luck

Andrew.

I agree with you reference the adverc charge controller, an excellent bit of kit! Sterling also, thats the one I have and it's very good.

what does the Adverc Alernator controller do?

already have a split diode!

The adverc or sterling, modifies the output of the alternator, to give a three? stage charging regime, which is what the lead acid battery likes, boost first lower meidum term and trickle to top up, it's something like that, but it keeps the batteries in much better ciopndition, than the old type system, which is basically to charge the batteries as fast as possible after they start the engine. This is especially useful if you have deep cycle or semi deep cycle type batteries, that is a simple explanation, for more technical jargon, you'll ahave to wait for somebody else to reply. I know they work, thats about all!

Adverc and Sterling are not equivalent. The sterling does give the 3 stage regime (I've just fitted one too) - I'm pretty sure the adverc just has a constant voltage.

Then the adverc is no good! Constant voltage is not the way to charge a battery. They used to use constant voltage a while ago, I've seen what it can do, the current must be limited aswell or the batteries will cook!

Just checked the adverc site, they are the same as sterling approx, they control the voltage and current to optimise the charging regime to the batteries.

Yes - adverc does control current, but I think it has a different charging regime to the sterling. IIRC the adverc doesn't have the 'pulse' charging that the sterling has once the battery is charged.

That depends how basic you want to be!

I don't know enough about batteries to understand the precise significance of the different styles; but I understand enough about banks to know the significance of the difference in prices - that's why I bought the sterling!

I have a sterling aswell, but it was bought on reccomendation, rather than price, but if the sterling is cheaper, then I'm happier! It works fine for me, I have a 330 a/h 24volt domestic battery bank, charged by one engine, the other 220 a/h bank is for engine starting only, so is direct from the other engine, without a sterling, it doesn't need one for the service they provide.

last year I bought 2 x Exide 110M (I think) from local ATS branch, this was the battery recommended by Adverc, negotiated a better price than anywhere else, they replaced 2 x Sonnechein Gel batteries which were about 11 years old and totally knackered. One went flat soon after fitting, recharged it and it appears to be OK, but I do recharge them over the winter. I have the earlier Adverc system fitted - TWC II - and Adverc were very helpful when I contacted them recently after having to remove the aternator to replace engine mountings, I lost the scrap of paper on which I wrote the connections on. My ignition light still does not light up when the key is turned although I followed exactly Advercs instructions(they were very helpful and patient) - I will have to wait until I'm afloat to see if it charges OK.

if i went to the boat i could get the info i wrote down when my alternator stopped working last year and i had to replace the reg.
I think it's W on the alternator that does the lights revcounter etc, but i can check if you want me too.
