We are in the Med at present and anticipate staying there for several years. I see a number of yachts with a bathing platform on the stern adn am seriously considering having one made/fitted. I would be interested to know what others think and any pros and cons of this. Also any recommendation on height of platform above the water or other tips would be interesting

These may be of interest.

We had one on a previous boat and it worked well. With the angled prop attached as low as possible on the transom, the platform was just about level with the top of the inflatable. This meant it was an easy step from one to the other. Also, it meant that the lower two steps were underwater with the ladder down.

It also made a stable platform for attaching the outboard to the inflatable and under way, we used to rest the inflatable horizontally across the platform and tie it up to the pushpit - nice easy way to transport the inflatable.

Hope this helps.

I prefer a good boarding ladder amidships. It is also a good safety option for getting back on board in rough seas.(point of minimum motion and all that)
The form of the stern can make it difficult to install a bathing platform near sea level at the stern unless your yacht has a broad transom or a sugar scoop stern.
Are you looking at an aft platform at a somewhat higher level with a boarding ladder attached?

Sorry - Link above will only take you to the Plastimo equipment page.

If you scroll down the to "platforms st steel" and then select "platforms" you will see what I was getting at.

Probably the best modification I have made to the boat since arriving in the Med. It transforms stern-to berthing, ditto bathing and makes an excellent location for showering, without having to clean soap and body debris from the cockpit. Look on some French websites (Accastillage Diffusion, U-ship) for various designs and sizes.

As to the height above the water, you will never get it perfect. In Greece the height of the walls varies from about 5 centimetres to about two metres. Just make sure that your passarelle is mounted on the aft end so that its angle up and down can be maximised.
