Bathing Platform Teak Replacement

The time is fast approaching for the bathing platform teak to be replaced on my Phantom 43. Wattsons have quoted £1060 +vat for the platform teak but were unable to give a recommended installer. The boat is kept in Lymington Yacht Haven and I was hoping there may be some recommendations for installers from the forum, preference would be real experience of someone's work. and work ethics.

As far as I know, you can't go badly wrong with Berthons. It most probably won't be the cheapest option, though.

I have had an 18 month nightmare with poor workmanship by so called teak spealists, I won't name an shame on here, however I have now had the teak almost completed , and at twice the cost ( as a lot of work done had to be removed and started again) by a proper tradesman, his name is lee 07754 490672 based in Poole, he might go to lyminton, pm me I'll tell you who to avoid !

The Targa 2 boats up from us towards you has just had new platform teak done, I think the teak came precut using original templates from Watsons and Jeremy Rogers in LYH fitted it, I'll ask how it all went and let you know.

I have a name and phone number, PM please if interested. Has done some great teak work a friends boat, bathing platform, cockpit and flybridge. Has done some work on mine, but not teak, and comes highly recommended.

The work has not been done yet but I did get a couple of quotes, in the end thanks to Andy's tip off I was able to speak to a Targa 52 owner in Lymington who recently had his platform re-teaked by Jeremy Rogers (on-site yard at LYH). He had also previously berthed at Berthon so was able to give insight on them as well.

So I will use Jeremy Rogers for the work but they are currently busy and can not get to it until September. Given I won't get much good weather time after that I think I will postpone the work until next spring and let the old teak deal with one more winter.

Just a thought, since re-teaking is necessarily a job that can only be done with the boat sheltered:
If you can shelter the boat for the whole winter, it would be a good idea to remove the old teak first, and let the GRP underneath dry out for as long as possible, before re-teaking.
In fact, particularly with cored grp (which I suppose is what you have under the teak) and a worn out teak, you can have water/moisture trapped between teak and GRP, potentially affecting also the core.
And of course, you don't want to seal and re-teak any GRP deck with water trapped inside.

'Fiuaskme, it would be an even better idea not to re-teak the platform at all, but have instead the old teak removed, the GRP surface epoxied plus antiskid-ed, and be done with it - but each to their own on that.
