Had an interesting chat with another boater today who was a basic boater and loved having no creature comforts around, he claimed it was true boating. I refuted this and claimed many of my gadgets and gizmo's (his terminology) made my boating much easier and safer as well as more pleasurable.

Over to everyone else.

damn, cannot find this far photo of a plank + outboard on a river posted 6-7months ago! That was indeed true minimalism. MM yours has lots of redundant elements (legs, beams under the table surface)

The hairshirt mentality is still alive and well in British boating then. I must admit I don't understand why it is necessary to be in pain and discomfort for boating to be enjoyable. I guess the kind of people who say this engage in sado-masochist sexual pursuits and enjoy camping. Max Mosley would enjoy basic boating, I think.

depends what you call basic I guess and we all have certain boat comforts we can not do without. - for me there has to be;
full working galley/fridge/dining area
comfortable saloon seating
comfortable cockpit seating
music system
heating
at least one WC and shower
hot and cold running water
generator
good sized comfy beds
a bathing platform with transom shower
ice maker
water filtration system for drinking water

Searush will be along shortly to tell us why all these things actually SPOIL your boating experience and why it is far better if you wear a hair shirt and pour cold water inside it at half hour intervals.

Gosh you are minimalist! What about stabilizers to stop the boat rolling, chartplotter to tell you where to go, and of course a R*cna anchor to grip the bottom when you get there???

I'm with bg on this! I'd probably drop the heating and I do agree chartplotter and decent anchor are part of the boat and shouldn't even be in the basics list ;)

OTOH, I'd probably skip the stabs as well and go around the isle or whereever I am to find a quiet place to anchor.

Whilst I love gizmos and gadgets - I have to say the most fun I ever had boating was when young in an old Maxum 17' bowrider.

Not REALLY basic, but no creature comforts - but it was FUN
