Based on recient tragic events i have ordered a CO dector

Had a new gas boiler fitted last Thursday and the talk went onto the boat tragedy. The fitter said that on breakfast TV they had a report on saying that some kids do not hear the alarm on CO2/ fire alarms, in the same way that only kids can hear the ones they use outside shops to get them to bugger off. I have had a quick look on the web but cannot find the report.

Did anyone else see it?

That doesn't really make sense. Kids generally hear a wider range and that's why they can hear the high pitched stuff. I'm uncertain as to how you could have a noise that adults can hear but kids can't.

"Breakfast TV", nuff said :)

I can imagine children perhaps not noticing or caring about the alarm, not realising it's meant to be a warning. Maybe this got Chinese-whispersed into "they can't hear it"?

Not possible. Not true.

There was only me and him in the kitchen but I definitely had a new gas boiler fitted on Thursday and I did talk about the boat tragedy with the fitter who said what he said.

Where were you then:)

If I get up early its because some one is paying me to, Or I'm going fishing or Sailing or even out for breakfast certainly never to watch breakfast tv.
its not the kids ability to hear the alarms, they hear fine if awake. The problem is small children sleep very deeply for longer than adults and will often sleep right through the ear piercing noise of a smoke alarm. CO2 alarms have simmillar noise.
My kids are bigger than me now so not a current problem. I remember when small once asleep we could pick em up take em out strap em into car and they wouldn't wake up.

I agree the fitter could have got the story wrong (like he fitted the boiler wrong and filled the house with gas:mad:) and have asked the BBC for a link.
However I did find this from the US.

One difference between models is that I have just sent back the 10 year warranted model be ause although the sensor lasts ten years the battery doesn't. 3 AA batteries need regular replacement. I have spent a couple if pounds more on the one with built in Li-ion battery. It's not at all obvious from Amazon site which is which

48 x AA Duracell batteries £13.99 on ebay

Which is considerably more than the difference between one with a built in lifetime battery and the cheaper model without. Plus the nause of the bloody thing beeping at you in the middle if the night when the battery is running out - if your lucky that is as you'll never know on returning to the boat if it has gone flat or not whilst you've been away etc.

Kids can't heard certain sounds, such as "Tidy your room!"

There are a lot of fakes about, I would never buy batteries for crucial devices on eBay.

I run all my safety devices, including some torches, with Lithium batteries; in my smoke detector they last about 8 years:

it has a green flashing light every 30 seconds.
what is the price difference pls & what model

I bought one with a 7 year battery for £15, same price as the 10 year without battery - yes of course you can test it etc it's just one less thing to worry about, have to unscrew from the wall, etc. Probably theres a 10 year battery at a similar price somewhere I wasn't that bothered!
