Barry, I would walk away from this one. Even without the engine failure, the fact that several major components were not operational suggests that the boat has been neglected - what other nasties might be lurking even if the port engine is repaired?
One general point. If an item (eg the speed log) is listed on the broker's specification, then it must be working. So if it is'nt, either insist the owner repairs it or negotiate the price down accordingly

Re: BarryD - how did the sea trial go? UPDATE

Recovered deposit today. Waiting to see what the owner wants to do, but too much missing maintenance for a cludge like me to cope with. Hunting for another boat to blow up. ColinM - can I come and play on yours?

Re: BarryD caper - match made in Heaven?

Becos

1. Colin is wurrid bout Barry's 100% record of engine blowups, hence seatrial ooer.

2. Colin's is diesel , which bary doesn't want, cos car nut hence diesels yuk.

3. Colins boat is 12k ish more than barry wants to spend

4. Colin hasn't psyched himself into a partic new boat yet, cos rivery types all teacosy cautious, and hasn't even worked out a passage plan to the bank.

5. Neither B nor C has mad wife who uses Gordonbrown-style fagpacket budgets involving spending same money three times over and "everything is bound to be ok", like Mrs S.
