Barry marina

I don't see us doing it. Whilst I think it would be great for Barry, and save some time on a sail Westwards, I'm sure the costs would be far higher than keeping our boat at Cardiff yacht club, and we'd miss the friendship and camaraderie there.

On a different slant what would make the perfect marina from us lots point of view? (Being sensible!)

All for $$15.00 per night! No pound sign on this keyboard
But it could have reasonable access and avoid banging around Lavernock

Seems a great idea can I reserve a pontoon?

Ilfracombe for sure. You need the tide under you to get out of the channel and with the prevailing westerlies that usually makes for wind over tide. If you have an easterly you can make good progress but Lundy isnt available to you. And in a fin, Combe isnt much use either.

We need a marina mid way between Cardiff and Padstow.

As for Barry - well the town is such a dump that who would ever feel safe keeping / leaving a boat there? Would you take your wife out for a meal, on foot, from a marina at Barry?

It looks as though Porthcawl will be regenerating their harbour. Work should begin next Spring (2012). This could be a good stop off to await a favourable tide. Weather needs to be favourable for entry, though.
Fair winds,

Ilfracombe is ideally situated, I am amazed it isn't happening.
I haven't been to Barry (land side) for years - has it really got that bad? Shame as it hols some great childhood memories, the outdoor pool (Cold Knap?) the steam train grave yard and being being bitterly disapointed when I discovered that it wasn't really an island!

Just a point regarding Barry being a 'dump'. The whole point of building Marinas in such old seaside towns such as Barry and Porthcawl is the regenerative effect they have. A few years back, I suppose many people would not have fancied taking their missis out for a meal in the old Cardiff docks area, but look at it now.

Sure, the places will not be transformed overnight, but it won't take many years before new businesses, pubs, restaurants and so on are attracted to the new waterfront. It's debateable whether they wll come without the marinas.

Well said. I have the same memories as Sneds as I spent a lot of my childhood in penarth. Cardiff and portishead have both had a turbulent/industrial past and both are doing reasonably well although I wish I recognised more of Cardiff when I 'go home' lol. I don't even know if cold knap is still there is it? I used to get quite upset when I'd take the train from penarth to Barry Island (not an island) and pass the steam train grave yard where they were all being cut up for scrap.
I was also Chairman of the 'Barry Radio Society' (radio 'ham') and we used to run a commemorative radio station on flatholm island every year to celebrate the transmissions from Lavernock Point to Flatholm by Marconi. Mind you, now meet in Sully!
Oh the memories. Errrmmm, what was the original question? :-). I think Barry would benefit from a marina but as mentioned also agree that a decent marina between here and Padstow would be nice. Leave you all to it, my malted milks getting cold..... Ha ha...

I'd seriously consider Barry, much easier to head west from than Cardiff Bay - gets you that little bit further down channel before the tide changes. With a Marina at Ilfracombe cruising here could become very civilised! :D

Be good to cruise from - Penarth/Cardiff, Portishead/Bristol, Watchet/Porlock all within 1 tide away for us.

I can see if being more popular for sailing rather than motorcruisers/sports boats though?

Good luck to Barry, it may kick start a general regeneration of the area.

Ilfracombe would be quite nice but would not be much help for passage making from up the channel. It would have to be gated, so would be closed when sailing down with the tide and when you need to leave to return. I can't see them paying for a lock, with all the dredging and manpower costs.

not so if you read the document you will see with the Northern Breakwater we would have protected deep water moorings

Are there any plans other than the "half tide gate"?
The moorings in the anchorage would be a good place to wait for the tide gate.
