The boat is now out of the water and the props and outdrives are covered in barnacles, its moored in the same place, been used the same as last season, covered the same distances yet end of last season there was not a banacle to be seen, why have i been infested with these hard little buggers this year doctors?

they must have moved in, like fish.

One daft idea would be to get a big container and fill it full of de-scaling fluid like Viakal , and then attach a long tube made of that Leaky Pipe in garden centres, and drape it over the sterndrives when you leave the boat, whcih should killem.

Another idea is to leave a radio switched very loud which might deter them - the yanks found that the bare patches coincided with where rating had their radios.

Note that they are quite local so there can be some place in the same marina which havem and others which don't. If you're renting on annual berth, grops around to find which boats have fewer barnacles and ask nicely for that one. Best get the wife to ask so she can say summink girly like the view is nicer or that 156 is her favourite number some other rubbish and they'll say okay.

Long, hot summer? Whereas 2002 was, um, not.

I bought my current boat last year and the outdrive was similarly infested when we hoicked her out, though prop less so (though it is S/S and therefore polishable, therefore less attractive to the little b*gg*rs, I suspect). I'm on the Beaulieu River rather than the Hamble but I suspect the eco-system is similar for us both. There does seem to be an element of chance about it, however: for example, this year the Beaulieu River was awash with jellyfish. No one seems to really know why; could be the weather, might be something else; perhaps it's the same with barnacles?

Alternative thesis is that Bob the Phantom Barnacle Breeder has been on the prowl round your way and dumped a shedload of baby barnacles in passing. ;o)

Re: Genetically modified Barnacle

I hav offered to the forum before but no interest!! Ah well, now you see the error of your ways. I hav conducted field trials and have the female barnacles ready to go, so to speak. The chemistry has been perfected with the transmogrification of the carbonate molecules. Once she's on your boat (add a touch of viagra) and Tarique Aziz .. they're gone. Good for old boats too as modelled on my own efforts with my vriend, Ulrika.

Good price now before world launch. hope that helps.
