Hi All,I have Barlow winches and need to remove the body for servicing, the information I have from the web
refers to a (dismantling handle) which I would think are now obsolete, so has anyone made up a tool which can do
the job ?. Help!

Just found new website re alternative tool , square piece of wood 5/8 square with hole in centre place in winch socket
and undo 3/16 holding bolt with allen key whilst turning piece of wood in the opposite direction, just done this in my workshop.

Note the winches were removed from the boat today they came off without the need to remove the drum all 5 bolts undone below deck and were attached to the complete winch, removed the as detailed above

Not really sure what question you are asking .... or whether you have solved it.?

My big Barlows need a tool with two 4mm pegs spaced about 2inches apart. Easily made. My small Barlows need a finger pushed firmly down the hole to release the drum. Probably other variants.

Mine get a gentle tap with a screwdriver in one of the two holes and they easily spin the top off. If you grease regularly the top doesn't get tight

Hi, The problem was not having a dismantling handle for old Barlow 23 winches as detailed in the first post.
While waiting for replies I found a new Barlow website which answered my problem of removing the body of the winch by an alternative method which consists of a square piece of wood ! that was the reason for editing the post I had indeed solved the problem.
Many thanks for your replies
