Barlow winch pawls

Just to confuse matters, post 9 in this thread reckons the Lewmar pawls are shorter (see pics).

The picture does seem quite conclusive. But the winches are now fitted to the boat and so just need to get out and give them ago.

I have emailed wichservicing.com mentioned in one of the links as they list bits for barlow but are out of stock so have asked if another 'make' will fit.

I suppose I should have search before posting, mostly do but wanted to get down the boat so thanks for replying.

So what was the end result? Do Lewmar winch pawl springs fit the Barlows? if so... which ones?

I've got a Barlow 15, 5 x 16s and 2 x 24s to strip and service!

I fitted Lewmar pawls and springs to my Barlow 28s successfully.
I was lucky in finding a chandler that had a stock of Lewmar parts in a pigeon hole display, not individually wrapped, so I could compare the sizes. The pawls were almost identical, the springs slightly different but work fine.

That's good to know... don't suppose you recall the lewmar part nos or the size label? ;)

Blatant bump!... Anyone?

The Hutton/Arco company in Oz have 'proper' Barlow pawls and springs but they are pretty expensive to buy and almost exactly the same amount to send!

Can anyone who used Lewmar ones as Barlow substitutes remember which ones they bought?

Stav's (broken?) link for the lewmar pawls is to yachtparts's web site. I too was put off by the shipping costs from Oz when searching for spares for my Barients (same springs/pawls as Barlow I believe). Andy in Yacht Parts sold me some springs and Pawls which he assured me would be OK. Don't know if they were Lewmar (no branding, just loose in a bag) but a search for "pawls" on yachtparts's web site only turns up Lewmar. I won't be stripping the winches for a couple of months yet but he usually knows his stuff and worst case, Plymouth is a lot closer to take them back to than NSW if they don't fit.

Bottom line: give Yacht Parts a call and see if they're confident enough with their advice to offer to taken the springs and pawls back if they don't fit.

Sorry, can't recall if there ever was a part number.
I got mine from One Stop Chandlery in Hatfield Peverel Essex. A proper old fashioned one where you were allowed to sift through a pigeon hole box to compare sizes.

Barlow bits: http://www.arco-winches.com/products/spares

We were in Trinidad and needed new pawls for a Barlow winch and contacted the company above, we never heard from them but that may have changed. We got a stainless fabricator to make them based on the worn ones. It was quite cheap, probably cheaper than the buying and shipping costs.

Thanks mate, I have been in touch with them. Their shipping costs are pretty high considering the package would fit in a simple envelope... US$30! (The bits were $38).

We (Lewmar) only have two sizes of pawl, standard and large.

Standard goes all way from size 6 winches to 48, along with the size 66/68
Large is much rarer and used from 50-64 only.

I would have thought if any of our pawls fit Barlow (I've heard rumours), that it would be the standard size version.

or from your local chandlery.
