Looking for a new/interesting place to visit this summer and trying to find info. about Barking Creek and the River Roding.
Looked on the internet but found very little about navigation.

Anybody been there?

Thanks Richard

The creek turns into a muddy ditch and is occasionally used by folks escaping the Lee.
It pretty much dries out at low water so unsuitable for all but the occasional narrow tin boats.

A Wikipedia link here of the Roding and probably Barking creek here:-

There used to be a site 'Tuesday night club' on the web but it's down at the moment.

If you really want to go up Barking Creek you need to go up on a rising tide. the creek becomes very shallow at low tide.

Depending on the size of your boat you should be able to get to Ilford. There used to be a tidal lock gate at Barking to hold the high water level but this has now fallen to pieces and allows the water to drain out so you will be left high and dry at low tide.

Most of the banks are industrial sites so unless you are an industrial landscape enthusiast it is not the place to go. The local feral kids can also cause problems especially if you are grounded.

Best scenario: Run up on a rising tide, turn around and go back again before the tide drops.

The West Ham Speedway rider Howdy Byford was known as the Admiral of Barking Creek.

Apparently he kept a little cabin cruiser up there where he would entertain the birds he pulled...................................
