Hello,

Does anyone know the difference between the Barient 28 and 28+ models of winches, please?

This week I am servicing winches (for the first time) because my port gib sheet winch is rotating freely - I guess this relates to the pawls and springs.

I've found this YouTube video helpful so far, but noticed that his winches (model 28) are slightly different from mine (28+) and wondered if there was anything I needed to keep an eye out for.

As you can see the bearings are arranged on the shaft differently - the 28 has two long sets, whereas the 28+ has three short sets with a spacer.

Just for the benefit of Google, one obvious difference I have noticed is that the spacer disks on my Barient 28+ winches are some kind of plastic / resin material, whereas those on the 28 in the video appear to be stainless.

Also for the benefit of others, these winches contain two gears which are nearly the exact same size, head-scratchers during reassembly.:

I notice now that one has more teeth than the other, but it is also 1mm or 2mm thinner.

The clue to reassembly is that the thicker one goes on the central shaft - it is above the other when the winch is in its normal upright orientation; i.e. during reassembly it goes in first and is "below" the other when you're looking at the winch bottom-up.

I'm pretty sure Gilly, of SV Last Affair, has his the wrong way around in the video I linked above:

In his blog post they're shown correctly, though: Laughing and Learning your way through servicing your Sailboat Winches
