barge for home

[ QUOTE ]
You may be looking for a hen's tooth, but if you want a large, cheap steel barge your best bet is looking in the areas they're still working.
That's the Rhine, Netherlands, Danube and some French waterways.

One of the key places in France where loads of old barges congregate is Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, which is where the Oise joins the Seine just west of Paris.
There are also quite a few barges for sale around St Jean de Losne, near Dijon - a number of barge repair yards and H2O, who run the Gare d'Eau there. www.h2ofrance.com (H2O's probably too 'good' and pricey for your needs).

Bonne chance.

Thanks for that , tried it , all but one already converted and by the price I think they are having a laugh , but much appreciated anyway , keep the suggestions flowing because somewhere out there is the answer and boatie folks are the ones that know what I'm talking about
Cheers
Dave

Try this site Apollo duck as they have barges from £2K.

Better off to travel to the french waterways where you can pick up 38m barges for just a few thousand euros. I know 'cos I've been offered them!
Even if you have money the french waterways will result in better value for money than UK barges.

Try Conflans outside paris, the heart of barging in northern France. Many abandoned barges there.
Also try St. Mammes as there is a section there with many barges

If you're serious, "PM" me and I'll give you some details of a couple of people to call (in english) who may find you something.

You can get what you are after in Holland, then bring it back by sea - as long as the engine is sound, and the hull is sound.

The problem won't be the boat, but the mooring!

Marinas, generally, won't like letting in a large barge.

Riverside moorings are very, very hard to find.

Have you made enquiries?

BTW, I live on a dutch barge, and my gf lives on her sailing barge next door.

Don't know why you think mooring would be difficult , although I suppose I am lucky as we live by a river which is where my current boat is moored .

Trevera25, I think that moorings are difficult to find. Currently, on the River Ouse, my gf and I took up the last two moorings on the entire river!

The rivers and canals are governed by British Waterways, and you can't just drop your hook and stay anywhere. There are temporary, free visitor moorings, but they are only for 48 hours.

Typically, marinas don't let in large steel boats. The Humber Cruising Association, in Grimsby, might have some berths, but I thought there was a waiting list.

Thanks for the input , I suppose my response wasn't clear enough , I own land on the banks of a river with 300yds of mooring rights attached so I have no problem with mooring , its what to moor on it , at the moment I have a 25ft coastal cruiser and I intend to use it as transport from the barge , which will be home , into town , but thanks for the adviceanyway

Blimey, where? (pm me if you want to keep it quiet)

Riverside moorings are like gold dust. To give you an example, I pay 92 per month for a mooring (but it does include access to services). That is considered cheap round here.

I wouldn't touch Sotherbys with a barge pole.

Try Alan Pease.

Also, Stefan Fritz of ACMarine is a good guy to talk to - he is a surveyor delivery skipper, sailing barge master and barge builder. He's often in holland and knows what to buy.

Generally, UK barges are much sturdier than their dutch counterparts - the dutch are very laid back about corrosion, and regard plating repairs as a casual thing

Calm down chaps and chapesses , I'm keeping the location quiet because I'm afraid I like my solitude at times , the nearest neighbour we have is the other side of the river and on this side it's half a mile , sorry but we like it that way . As for the possible search routes , many thanks thats added a few , but keep the help flowing folks , it's all helping.

Thanks everyone , I now have found a barge that suits my needs , problem now is how to move it . Any ideas on how to get a barge that is nearly ninety foot long , with an engine that isn't working , from the river hull to the river Welland . It is a seven hour round trip drive so I could do with it being closer to home to work on , but as it's not running I think I need to tow it . Probably in the spring , but all ideas welcome
