Bargain or useless?

I have been watching this AIS transponder, but as there is no indication whether it has had an MMSI number input I cannot tell if it might have been worth a punt, or is just useless because as far as I can find out the MMSI number cannot be changed once input. It's only a receiver, you will not be transmitting so it does not need MMSI. I have a full transponder, so I don't know much about receive only sets, but I don't think this is particularly cheap compared to a brand new set.

get a Bellfield dongle £100 if you intend it for LAPPI

You are right, there was a transceiver but I have lost the link. I agree that the price is now too high for one with no guarantee that it even works.

The Garmin AIS600 is a transceiver.

You are right, there was a transceiver but I have lost the link. I agree that the price is now too high for one with no guarantee that it even works.

The AIS600 is a transceiver, but as it doesn't necessarily work it could easily become another eBay "bargain".

It's one of the half-dozen or so set eBay condition categories. In practice what it means (given the text in the description) is "we are not willing to provide a guarantee that it works". Otherwise, if someone buys it and claims that it doesn't work, eBay will immediately refund their money without any real investigation.

Those are eBay's standard words. What the seller actually says is:

I am fairly sure this item powers up and works because of the condition of the item, and the origin of the stock, but I can’t guarantee it because either I don’t have a power cable or the facility to test it.

Still a risk, but not the same thing as "it does not work".

A friend has bought quite a few laptops, PCs, drives etc. untested and had found quite a large proportion either work or are cheap to repair.

However, he works in IT support for a large company. Trained to repair laptops etc. and plenty of spare bits around at home from previous purchases. So minimal risk and he only buys things that go for really small amounts.

I'm generally only interested in fully working 2nd hand stuff if 50% or less of price for similar new item. Certainly wouldn't stretch to 25% for non-tested item unless I was pretty certain I could fix it (or sell bits for about same amount). This looks as if it is >£210 incl. postage and a new one is probably around £700 so going to be at least 1/3 price of a new item at rate it is going. Doesn't sound like a bargain for a transponder that might work and probably needs some work as MMSI probabl set already. I believe that Garmin model is progammed via PC but manual states that MMSI number cannot be changed once programmed. OP agrees, though a dealer might be able to do it for additional cost.
