I saw Silva (waterproof) M55 DSC VHF radios advertised recently for £169.99, they have been retailing at £299 and £349, they are at these prices at Aladdins cave and Seamark Nunn (who I think may be £179). Anyway I bought one of these from Alladins cave and it was delivered today, I have found out from markings on it that it is in fact a Simpson-Lawrence (SL) M55, but identical to the Sliva star 55. I contacted Silva who stated that SL are no longer trading, and that it was not one of their radios. When I asked about the warranty they said that it was nothing to do with them, and referred me to the dealer, they stated that theirs which are identical are branded Star 55. I spoke to the dealer and asked why they were advertised as Silva ones, they said they were supplied by Silva, and were confused, they are going to get back to me tomorrow, but does anyone know what is going on with these radios?

The Silva Star M55 is a rebadged Swiftech which was distributed by Simpson Lawrence. (PBO July 2002)

You may have bought old stock. The model is def owned by Silva now.

Go back to Silva and ask for a manager that knows what they are talking about, and ask if old stock though being sold now SL models are being covered by Silva warranty

I would not worry too much about the warranty as your statutory rights will not be affected.Just keep the receipt as you are perfectly well covered by the Sale of goods Act 1979,in particular section 14 which obliges the person who sold you the set to supply you with goods of a satisfactory quality i.e fit for the purpose you bought it for.,regardless whether old stock etc etc.Sound like a good price for a dsc unit to me.

Hi Banus,

The sets have been selling very fast, information I got was that Silva had 200 non Silva badged that they wanted to move so offered them to some Chandelry's, they are the ones with Simpsom Lawrence on but still M55's brand new.

http://www.seamarknunn.co.uk/catalog/cat46.htm The radio is on this page 'Hot Offers' As you say it is rude not to get one at this price, they were £299 a week or so ago. I wouldn't be too happy if I had paid full price for one /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif (P&P) free over £150 I think, so near the same price total as Aladdin)

Better be quick, Good luck,

Cheers,

Having just fitted a Nasa 35 DSC

I can say that for the money I am pleased with it and it seems to perform very well, although it doesn't look as pretty as some of the more expensive units out there admittidly, it is very useful to be able to dial up on the mic your required channel, a feature I haven't seen on many other systems at the budget end.

Re: Having just fitted a Nasa 35 DSC

Hi wakeup,

I looked at the SX35 as well, I must say for my needs the M55 was a flatter with the fitting bracket and better fitting for under the consul for me, the buttons and front are totally waterproof, with full buttons on the handset, although on the rear. SX35 looks to be neater for surface mounting but just IMHO. Both are a good price and down to personal pref really. Just out of interest did you get the external speaker, I was considering this and don't know if anyone has any views on this. The price of the speakers varies, all gadget seems to have one at a very good price.

Cheers,

Re: Having just fitted a Nasa 35 DSC

Yo Happy,

No I didn't go for the external speaker, I thought I would wait to see if the unit were lound enough and baering in mind I've only got a small boat 6.55m then it wouldn't really seem much point. The Nasa unit seems lound enough without the external speaker, the Nasa unit doesn't come with the flush mounting bracket you have to buy that so adds to the costs, i've mounted mine using the suspension braket and it justs fits. I am still waiting for my MMSID though been waiting 2 weeks thus far.

Cheers
