I went to Barclays ATM to get out £20. The money came out, but before I could take it, a shutter came down, and I could not get the £20.

Has anybody else had this experience?

The machine should have recorded that you didn't take the £20 so hopefully you will not be charged. If you have internet/mobile banking look at that to see if charged. Otherwise, if you think it is worth your time, try phoning the bank

I shall do all that, and go into the Bank on Monday.

I wondered if anybody else had had the same experience

In the past I once had a cash machine not pay out the correct amount. It was £20 short. The following day I went into the branch and complained. They said they would have to wait until the machine was opened for a physicsl check. They found they were £20 over the balance, so I was refunded to my account. So complain to your bank immediately and it should get sorted, provided you have not used a scam cash point cover. Even then they should refund you. I suggest you immediately change your pin number to stop a scammer using your card information and pin number to drain your account. I was once scammed on a credit card and did not know anything about it until the statement arrived with nearly £3,000 of cash withdrawls despite never having made a cash withdrawl on the credit card. I was fully refunded.

Despite the questionable forum selection (How many boat parts can you get for £20 anyway?)...this is there to protect people who forget to take their money and the transaction should be voided if they take the money back (ie they know about it and you don't have to pay). It's doesn't happen immediately though: it takes a couple of minutes and it'll beep at you before taking it back.

As for "who could be so stupid as to not take their cash?..." well in the days when cash was actually A Thing for people other than tax dodgers and the over 80s I stopped by the cash machine one morning some 20-odd years ago, put in my card, asked for considerably more than £20, took my card back then half an hour later realised I'd walked away without talking the money. On talking to the bank they said the machine records if they take the money back but in my case someone had taken it. Subsequent to that I tended to glower at the shoeshine bloke who's little stall was opposite the machine whenever I passed.

My eldest boy tells of the time when he used a cash machine in a dodgy area. There was a guy nearby who fitted all the mugger stereotypes, so he moved off smartly at the end of the transaction. A moment later, said dodgy guy is running after him and calling. Convinced he's about to be robbed, he turns into a defensive stance to face the would-be robber, who skids to a halt and waves Sonny Boy's cash at him. "Here mate, you forgot this"
