Bank Holiday On The River

As the bank holiday draws to a close I think we should all share our bank holiday on the river.
I certainly had a nice time , was out on saturday the best day out of the three , Just took her out for a general cruise with friends. Moored up near Walton (Very Busy) and chilled. I wish i went out on sunday or monday but was working on sunday and revision on monday /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. Lets look forward to next bank holiday when hopefully it will be even warmer /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

On saturday , i didn't even get time to get my cup out of the cupboard , let alone make a cup of tea.

Thames Valley Rally, so a 5 odd hour trip each way, plus much cleaning, putting lights up, pulling lights down, etc and wearing smart Blazers etc etc...

We entered as a two-person family team for the first time, and didn't quite disgrace ourselves.

The first test, a classic long stay bankside mooring which was achieved, but amidst much flustering as the pressure got to me.

Secondly, a 90 degree bows-in mooring, not badly done, but a bit messy on the ropework.

Finally, a 360 degree bankside tuen, using the single engine only, and whilst keeping a 15M line at 90 degrees to the shore. Now while I admit my rope ability is pants, the helming bit comes fairly naturally, so we won this one outright /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The score would have got us a bit of the family Silver, but RYA scoring system kept us one point away, which was tough luck eh? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Next year will be different... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We got through ten bottles of Wine between two of us, but I reckon the Ramage twins beat it... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Thanks for the compliment, the old girl does scrub up well, and in fact it was making me blush as so many Boat fetishists came up all misty eyed and said how nice she looked. Just as well really, as I was neck deep in the Thames scrubbing the waterline in a vain attempt to win a Concours trophy for Bray, and ironically, the winning boat's waterline looked like a drunken painter had attacked it with Aerosol...DOH!

No problems at all, the whole thing ran like a Rolex, Bray crews performed very well indeed, and everybody had a great time IMHO.

Peter the locky from Hambledon gave us a great presentation about his 60 years on the River, with little snippets of age old info for the historians to drool over, a timely reminder how much some of these guys really know, yet rarely have a chance to air. A humbling experience indeed!

Nice to meet lots of forumites too, Mike, Tony, Shades, Paul & Alex, Andy and Pauline, Darren and Debs, to name just a few, they were all working hard to keep Bray at the top, or the TVR well oiled.

I would estimate Bray is now the most popular clubs 'en River'

It was an absolutely fantastic weekend and you made it all the more special with all your hard work with the lights and helping to win the boat handling for Bray.

For a first time entrant No Regrets came a very respectable 3rd (take this from someone who came 13th out of 13 boats one year!) with only 2 crew when the rest of the boats had 3.

Lets also congratulate Alex on Carli for a fantastic job as Cadet skipper. Paul, you should be very proud.

It was a great haul of silverware once again!
It was well worth the 12.5 hour journey back to Teddington today!

Well you were first place on my score sheet for Test 3 (and second on the other judge..)

Very well done for a first timer and single engine boat and only the two of you on the boat when others had three - thats flippin good going!!

Yes well done to all the TVR committee on a great weekend - its nice for me to be able to turn up and not get involved in organising something for a change /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As Jaws said, well done John on the boat handling, I really think a third crew member would have been beneficial but understand why you didn't want one. Makes coming in third overall an even better achievement and you were smiling through most of it, so looked like you enjoyed yourself.

Seems your talk about winning everything before hand must have scared off the Harleford and Windsor mobs - what a reputation you have eh?

Shame about the light show but I think you were simply "out spent" by the winning boat (which was very impressive with its laser light show).

Did hear you'd been wading in the water cleaning the water line but didn't actually believe it, don't suppose you came across Jaws' lost VHF while down there did you? (Or the chairs / sunglasses that also went over board over the weekend.)

What a weekend. Yes, I am very proud of Alex (Rebellion)'s boat handling, thanks also to Apollo's Alex & my SWMBO.

Alex & I took a little wander down the sales pontoon at Bray and fell in love with a boat. Anyone want to buy a prize winning Birchwood 25 diesel on shaft?

SWMBO says the boat in question is too expensive, and claims I was talking about her in my sleep...

We have asked Bray to advise us on a price for Carli though. Sadly I suspect SWMBO will torpedo our dreams /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
