Remember Sandy Denny?

For you are like the others, he said.
I never can be sure
That you wish just to see the pearls
And nothing more.

It is a waste of time and it annoys the pig.

Bob,

You're right about banning fishing on lines. When you have introduced the ban will I still be able to lob a stick of dynamite into my local river when I want some trout?

More on nm

But there's no point putting "nm" in the body of the post - it has to go in the subject box otherwise we have to open the post to find out there isn't one - gottit?

Re: You\'re talking poo

"Because the experience of pain is separate from the behavioral response to injury, the term nociception is used to refer to detection of injury by the nervous system (which may or may not lead to pain). Injurious stimuli that usually lead to pain experience are called nociceptive stimuli. The term pain should be used only to refer to the unpleasant psychological experience that can result from a nociceptive stimulus".

Re: You\'re talking poo

Exactly- you can apply the same argument to newborn babies- it's just nocioception, ie a physiological response to a noxious stimulus. It all depends on peoples sensibilities and whether we humanise the perception of pain in animals.

Definately getting nb

Re: No chance of banning Bloody football I suppose.NM

Now you are talking!

We're probably in a minority of two, but I'ld vote for that!

Re: No chance of banning Bloody football I suppose.NM

Bloody football is kind of banned already. Players with cuts have to leave the pitch to be patched up, and are not allowed back on until its sorted.

It's not angling that I'd ban - after all its only the fish that are even more stupid than the anglers that get caught and that must be good for the evolution of the species.

It's the trawlers. It's like catching antelope by dragging a net behind a Hercules from above cloud over the Serengeti.

We needn't worry though, the industry is doing a pretty good job of self-destruction anyway.

May have your wish, heard the tail end of a bit on local news that that there was some talk at lab con that they are introducing some ban to protect dophins.

Funny Nation here we are, we ban hunting, but there are probably more old folk die each winter than foxes killed by hunting, how many are terriffied by muggers, and infact injured by them, or just left to die from starvation or cold, do we care, no we start looking after dolphins. We can find billions for any odd thing, we can go to war because we think these people have a bad life, but a pound on the pensions!!!!!!!.

Funny old country.

Surely

Its OK to allow people like Parahandy to keep on angling as the fish are never in much danger of being caught and it keeps the silly old sod out of trouble - God help us all when he starts messing with the radar.

Re: ITS NOT JUST FISH!

I presume you are from the Ministry Of Entrapment, and now I have looked at your site I can expect a police visit to impound my PC and will have my name put on the register of those who had unnatural thoughts toward vegetables, or do I still have to download rather than visit.

Re: You\'re talking poo

"The study at Edinburgh University and the Roslin Institute in the Scottish capital concludes that fish have nervous system receptors, or "polymodal nociceptors," in their heads that respond to damaging stimuli.

The ones in trout were the first to be found in fish and have similar properties to those found in amphibians, birds and mammals including humans, PA said.

Dr. Lynne Sneddon, who led the study, told PA: "Our research demonstrates nociception and suggests that noxious stimulation in the rainbow trout has adverse behavioral and physiological effects. This fulfils the criteria for animal pain."

Angling is crueller than hunting. The hounds break the foxes neck instantly whereas fish can suffer over a long time.

"the miserable, cowering creature is torn limb from limb by the savage pack." This is correct but at least the hounds have quickly killed the quarry before tearing to shreds thus minimising suffering.

In coarse angling the fish is tortured then imprisoned before the poor thing is released, often to die soon after.

Yes. For food of course. With dynamite or semtex the fish would feel no pain. They either die instantly or are temporarily stunned and recover with no more than the tiny headache their little brain feels and swim off. Good for salmon too.

I suggest you do it from the shore so as not to blow the bottom out of your boat.
