We're planning to go to Stockholm via the Kiel canal. I have seen somewhere a recommendation to have a jab for tick borne encephalitis. Do other people have this? Is it over the top or really needed?

I think that it might be unnecessary for coastal sailing but might be worth considering if doing the Gotha canal. The map gives the same risk level for Germany Poland and Denmark but none as high as Switzerland or Austria. I've not been to Stockholm but done west and South Sweden as well as Germany and Poland and have to admit that I haven't bothered with vaccination myself. Allegedly, the condition is rarely fatal in Europe.

Stockholm archipelago is one of the main risk areas for TBE in Sweden. If you are going to spend some time there, vaccination is well worth considering. This links to a web page in Swedish, but the map gives an indication of where infections are most common:
https://tbe.se/riskomraden/
Still it should be said that the risk of getting the infection is quite small. Around 200 infections each year in Sweden.

Edit: Seems like last year was particularly bad with almost 400 cases.

Never heard about locals having this vaccination. But then, we scandinavians have tic(k) skin ..

Don't know where you get your information, but already 2013 around 500 000 doses had been sold in Sweden, presumably mostly to people in high risk areas. 4 or 5 doses required for best protection.

The hazards of ticks are pretty much as widespread as in the UK. Almost anywhere livestock or wild deer live can be considered a risk area. Did Kiel to the Clyde via Norway last year. Did not get any jabs, but took proper tick removing tools. (tiny Plastic forks). Just inspect yourselves after any walk ashore
Wear long trousers!

But the low number is the case because the majority of Swedes have the jab...

I got Lymes from ticks at Cheddar Gorge. Often, after climbing there, a deticking session would find at least half a dozen. They are easy to miss and sometimes only found after they are engorged from a good feed.

That sounds familiar. Anywhere on Scottish hills/ islands has the same hazards..
