Has anyone any experience of a Balaton 24?

What are they like to sail? Do they have any quirks? Are they a lake boat (Lake Balaton is the lake in Hungary) or will they cross the channel safely from the Solent?

I'v tried googling the design name but there is little (and then even less in English).

Your thoughts anyone? Many thanks in advance...

Don't know anything about them myself, but Hoskyn's Yacht Directories' Good Yacht Guide says:-

"Bigger sister to Balaton 18 with similar but cleaner lines and near flush deck. Good headroom and separate WC. LOA 24.44' x BEAM 7.55' x DRAFT 3.94' (fin and bilge keel). Inboard or outboard engine."

(of the Balaton 18 it says "Smart, chunky, quite roomy cruiser from Hungary in early 70's")

As the author usually comments if he thinks a boat's capability is limited, I would think it perfectly capable of crossing the channel.

I remember the boat,there was also a Balaton 18.

No personal experience but think I have a brochure, feel free to PM or e-mail me for scanned details.

I see here the boat was imported by V.G.Waring & Son of Windermere,

1.2 metres draught, " weight of fin or twin keels " 580kg, overall displacement 1,650 kg ."

May well be happier on lakes, I don't remember seeing one in coastal waters, but as I say I've not sailed one.

I bought a neglected Balaton 24 for not much money a few weeks ago - just waiting for the weather to warm up before tidying her up. She is currently out of the water on the lower Itchen, Southampton. I can find very little information either, I guess that it is quite an unusual boat in this country. Regards Paul
