Come to think of it, how can a low pressure deepen explosively?

harumph .. the whirly thing on top of K3 in the middle of Shannon has dropped orf or given up. should be F9-11 just now but claims wind speed since midnight fixed at 1.9kn.
just the job for the met office to get out and about and go and fix it.

It's a meteorological expression I believe. It refers to a surface low which has either another high-level trough above it, or a jetstream whipping across the top of it, thereby sucking the top of the low and causing it to deepen rapidly. Met men refer to that as a "bomb", hence the explosive bit.

All the above words were correct but not necessarily in the right order, and not guaranteed to apply to this subject!
