One of my rudders went very stiff so obtained some new bearings (took a year to source). Planned cruise to first get a quick bearing swap at Gosport Boatyard. After 4 people eventually wrestled the rudder out of the old bearing, discovered that the bearing housing is completely trashed and has to be replaced.

Now trying to find a replacement!

Believe it or not, it's not that surprising that a stiff rudder wrecked its housing. One sometimes needs to put a crane overhead and pop them out with an acrow!

What is the boat, have you any pics of the damage, and what do Gosport Boatyard say? Is it repairable? At worst this requires a new stern tube and they're fairly generic and straightforward to fit for a decent yard.

Once you know the exact spec, there are many local fabricators who could almost certainly machine a new one, or failing that a company like Jefa could provide an alternative. That might involve a delay of up to 10-days though.

Dunno what it's like now but if Gosport Boatyard have maintained their standards you are in good hands!

They bailed us out a number of times when we had our charter boats round at Haslar Marina.

Good luck! :encouragement:

Thanks to both. I managed to track down the correct housing at JP3, and am waiting a delivery now from International Boat Spares.

The boat is a Privilege 37 Catamaran - my home. Now perched up in the nose bleed sections at Gosport Boatyard.

also a longterm fan of gby- this post reminds me of when we had our dehler out there to change rudder bearings and couldnt make rudder drop out- were advised togo for walk and come back 10 minutes later when it had been done-reason for walk - they had to encourage rudder to drop and owners often alarmed at what encouragement involved!
