As you say, a camera shot inside would help quell your fears, otherwise it is a difficult re-engineering job. I think the chances of getting the four screws in and out cleanly are about zero, unless you drill access holes under that builder's plate.

That's what I think.

I think only way is to split backstay and install two new backstay chainplates which I really don't want to do. And getting the old one off and making good will be a job in itself.

Hence wanting someone to put an arm round me and say "it'll be reet"

That boat, in pic, has had a hole cut behind builders. Pretty sure to install self steering. Some have put speakers, ie big holes either side. But to grind blind very tricky and not convinced you could get to the vital spot anyway.

Which it almost certainly will.

If they'd not sealed the screws properly they'd have failed before now. Is there any history of these failing? I bet there isn't.

No history of failing to my knowledge.

I don't know if it's helpful, but on my 1977 boat, I have replaced ss bolts holding the stem head fitting and the shroud plates for various reasons - but all the 3/8" bolts I removed were in good condition and are now in the spares box awaiting reuse.

First step some decent pics.
Second step remove a lower shroud chainplate and have a look. Simples in comparison.

Would the 'hole' liner come out ? It must have been put in afterwards as it goes out through the hull.

I have thought about that. It's bonded in with large overlap at hull side. Would be very destructive and way beyond my skills to put back satisfactorily. Also would still be grinding blind, as far as i can tell, when trying to reveal nuts.
