Backing plate requirement for utboard bracket (40kg motor)

I'd welcome advice on this. Obviously an internal backing plate is needed but do I need to put a wood backing plate between the outboard bracket and the transom ? Its for a 40kg 4 stroke and thebracket which seems well made has 4 bolt holes.

You need to take a lot of factors into account. I put a wooden backing plate on between the transom and the bracket mainly because I could not get the outboard angle right. I fitted a wooden piece that was 2 inches thick, tapering to half an anch. This corrected the angle of the bracket.

If the transom is strong enough (ie backed correctly)you can bolt it on directly. However, I would use a thin rubber backing plate or use a sealant. Dry mount the bracket first, mask it with tape around the outline of the bracket. Then loosen off the bolts, inject a large amount of sealant behind it, and tighten down, until the layer of sealant is (at least 4mm thick) oozing out. Clean off excess with a rag, then peel tape off. give it a couple of days to cure in this weather though!
