Backing pad/plate for skin fitting – why?

Thanks again to all who contributed to this thread, I have found the different perspectives on the subject interesting and helpful.
To sum up, although I tend to sympathise with much of what Tranona says in post #34, I also agree that there is not a lot of work or cost in adding a backing plate to a skin fitting, for the possible benefits it may have.
As someone raised the question of backing plates on loaded deck fittings like cleats etc, I must stress that I have no doubts about their usefulness.

Regarding the adding of photos to posts, I agree that this is often helpful for the discussion (when photo quality is reasonable) and I frequently do so when posting. Sometimes though, there is no suitable photo (and the boat not at hand to take one), so the circumstances must be described in words only. That must surely also be acceptable?
To the various methods of handling forum post photos already mentioned I would like to add Dropbox, which I have found to be easy to use. Up to 2 GB storage is free of charge. Resizing can be done already on uploading to the DB folders, to store the photos in a size suitable for e-mails, internet forums, text messages etc.

I have replaced my skin fittings with backing plates using plywood precoated in a layer of woven fibreglass in resin about 5 years back... So far so good.
