Yes, I know that 'old fashioned' dead reckoning should be the back-up, nevertheless, now our old e-trex has packed up, I am thinking of a hand-held that would also be good for UK hiking. There's a big jump from the basis hh (around 80.00 from Amazon) to the ones that come pre-loaded with UK OS maps. Opinions? Suggestions?

coincidence ! I am looking at the same problem.

Both COtswold Outdoors and GoOutdoors have Garmin Etrek 10 / 20 / 30 at the best UK prices. Robust and waterproof.

Have you tried a hard reset on your old Etrek ?

Expensive, but I use a Memory-Map Adventurer 3500 with full UK charts. See: www.memory-map.co.uk

As a backup you can get the marine charts on a smart phone, either Android or iPhone .

OS maps are also available for this device or the smart phones.

Hope that helps.

David H.

eTrex

The only thing I don't like about the later models is the Hg sensor. The first ones out could not be turned off and thus ran the batteries flat. I'm not sure if Garmin fixed that problem.

Having said that, I really like my etrex, both as a hiking tool and as backup on board. Being waterproof, I also like to use it when dingying back from the pub (provided you remember to mark your position).

Garmin: Montana - Oregon or Dakota.

You can get maps OS legally free try googling - Bing maps.

TO me there is no question...

my Grmin 72 is fine - anyting more and you might as well step up to hand held plotter. but with proper paper charts and a garmin 72 you should be able to navigate perfectly well. i keep one in case of total electrical failure of my 12 volt batteries.

I have a Garmin 76 Csx with Blue Charts. Works very well as a binnacle mounted unit. Big Raymarine plotter is at the Nav station and the Garmin is far better and faster.

I routed a direct wire to the house batteries via a 12 V waterproof connection.

Voila!
