Just got back yesterday from a fantastic week on the boat. Crossed over to Cherbourg Sat 12th. Crossing was as flat as a pancake, the sun was shining, beer was cold. Brilliant.
About 16 nm north of Cherbourg we hit fog, vis down to 50mtrs, I had hoped it would clear before landfall but it didn’t. Almost bumped into outer harbour wall and had to “feel” our way along to entrance. We finally tied up, and a couple of hours later the fog lifted.
Spent a couple of nights in Cherbourg scoping out the restaurants as we had a new recruit to channel crossings on my mates boat. She wanted a day or 2 to recover from crossing which is fair enough.
The plan was to move on to Guernsey, then Dielette, Jersey, then St Malo. Unfortunately the weather put paid to that. It was still fairly sunny(ish) but it was fairly breezy so we remained in St Peter port for rest of week. On the plus side, we had a day out in Herm, ending with a beach BBQ. Dom came over in his boat and took us on one of his “Magical mystery tours” through the rocks. There had been a thunderstorm earlier, and Herm & Sark had a veil of mist over them making it impossible for Dom to line up on the transits he uses, so in the interests of safety we took a less dramatic ride
(Phew! That was a result then!)
With all the mist and fog about, I decided to look for a radar. Dom let me down here, he couldn’t get one for my budget of £25. ahem!
We set off back home via a Poole stop over. And where were the Poole gang?? Duncan wasn’t down this weekend, BarryH’s phone was off all weekend and I didn’t have GeoffS, or Happys phone numbers. Did speak to Aztec who was on a night duty.
By chance it was Wareham carnival weekend (thanks for tip-off Duncan)
We had a lunchtime pint in The Banks arms garden, at Studland, in the sunshine.
We met up with a few (non forum) friends, and afterwards had a zoom around the back of “Old Harriys” rocks in a lunatic 23ft boat with 8.4ltr V8. That was fun /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
Evening came round, and we went up to Wareham quay on the 23 footer, well we nearly did.
(ran out of petrol on the way up) so we jumped ship, and cadged a lift of a couple of blokes in a Dory
If you’re reading this- thanks guys.
Had a nice steak in the Italian restaurant where we had the forums “Wareham get together”
Afterwards watched the live band on the quay, who I must say were rather good. Good party atmosphere.
Next morning had a visit from Aztec. Had a chat and a coffee but was getting a bit late for a trip out as our friends on the other boat wanted to get back.
We set off back for home in the afternoon. We waved goodbye to our friends as they peeled off towards the river Itchen . We went to The Hamble via “The Anchor” in Cowes If you know what I mean.
All in all a good week. No disasters to report, no breakages Thanks again Dom for all your help. Nice to see you and Aztec again. As for Duncan and the others………Next time maybe??
