Alternator knackered, engine supplier quotes £350 plus shipping- best alternative £160, plus shipping, two hundred miles away, neither can test the unit obviously.

Visited T A Spares. 6, Ordnance Street, Chatham, ME4 6SL (01634 812585). tested the unit in minutes- Yep, it's had it!

Boxes and boxes of new and recon. alternators- mine out of stock, as the new hybrid cars are soaking up supply.

Never mind says the boss " I'll get you back on the water soonest- I'll rebuild your unit overnight and call you tomorrow to collect".

Price? (I Don't know and don't care) but less than their new unit price of £150 + VAT

An update- for anyone interested.

Received the promised phone call at 10.00am this morning, to tell me the recon'd unit was ready for collection.

So it was, rebuilt, and in pristine external condition- just like a new unit. Total cost inc. VAT £152 which included, at my request as I had had to cut the original wires due to corroded terminals, new crimped cable lengths for the two low current connections to connect with the cut harness wires and a complete length of heavy duty battery positive wire with crimped terminals each end for reconnecting to unit/ master battery switch.
