B1\'s diesel hoover

I didn't see any follow up to this fab contraption, nor pics. I have gotta disel pump (bout 60 quid of the net) with various fittings, though not sure if i have enuf pipe to go all the way up to the filler wotsit to circulate thru the tank.

Re: B1\'s diesel hoover

um er not sure. I think mebbe jfm put me onto it. It's red, 240 volts and made a right woofering mess of the carpet when i turned it on. B1 seems to have made a good job of the pipework in and out whereas i am poncing about with 1inch bsp reducers and have got precisely nowhere. Worst of all, the boat seems to work ok with the guernsey-supplied Special Original Liquidised Twice-Roasted Orangutan's Nipples additive.

Look for pumps here in the search if you want to buy one - one of jfm's posts in last 3 months i think.

Re: B1\'s diesel hoover

Hi tcm
I would be surprised(no-amazed and worried) if a boat as new as yours would have any bottom crud remotely similar to my 30 year old mild steek tank!
I have said before that your observance of 'white flakes' sounds very much to me as if somewhere along the line fuel has cooled to its waxing point but I am no expert in this field. MAybe we should ask Dom if he knows anything about this and what, if any, improvement ********* would bring if this is the case,

My dieselvac rig is a 12volt motor/pump and impeller is vane type, not rubber/neoprene as usually found in Jabsco type pumps. It is specifically for diesel only.
Yes, I went to great lengths to match up correct hose/adaptors on suction side. Discharge hose and nozzle etc came as part of kit. I had to cobble together the whole caboodle on the suction side. Filter is actually a raw water filter with fine wire mesh added by me lining inside the plastic filter basket. (an improved filter type is on order)

NB........the primary purpose of this rig was to remove as much solid crud as possible frorm bottom of tank and it did this admirably. I didnt have any significant water at bottom of tank but I am confident that , if there had been, I would have been able to suck it out and discharge into a seperate container.
At 40litres/min the diesel gets frothed by the filter so there is no possibilty to visually see change accurately between water/diesel - you would need to assess quantity of water from dipstick/wfpaste.

Re: B1\'s diesel hoover

yes, woofering. Unable to resist playing with an electrical item costing a whole 60 quid sitting in the hallway, i unpacked it, noting that the instructions said that it was ONLY for diesel. Hm. But i wanted to try it out, and see if it worked, and also convinced myself that it would be sensible to do so, otherwise i wd have to bring it all the ay back home. So, i plugged it in. UNfortunately it seems that they have flipping bench tested them first so moderate quantities of diesel splurted out, accompnaied by a sort of woofering noise since inlet and outlet were open, like running an engine a bit without the exhaust connected. Not to worry though, I have sold the house on account of it being too close to Bromley.

Re: B1\'s diesel hoover

They weren't white flakes, but they were small 2-3 mm flakes, black in colour.

I am wondering if it wd be an idea to have a permanent filtering thing, normally closed by valves, whereby the diesel is circulated out of the tank and back in through the return pipe.

Re: B1\'s diesel hoover

Your engines probaly do that already, they are normally a full flow type of system, whereby all the fuel from the tanks is pumped through the filters, to the engine, then most of it back to the tank. Eventually of course, over a few hours.

Re: B1\'s diesel hoover

That water finding paste looks useful. Can't seem to find anywhere to buy it on the net (unless I want 12 tubes!). Is it available from chandlers or engineering shops or similar?

Thanks
