B&G Vulcan 7 Missing Data

GS25/point-1/ZG100 are all almost identical except that the Point-1 will stop transmitting heading if there is another heading source connected. Guess how I know :)
I'm about to fit a Garmin steady cast but as I haven't fitted it yet I can't say how well it talks with B&G.
I've just been looking at all these. The GS25/ZG100 seem OTT for me as I don't have an issue with GPS lock and have heel data from the DST810. I can't see us ever needing to fit an autopilot/radar to this boat. The Steadycast seems to fit the bill so I'm interested to find out how that goes for you.

Will post results but it will be mid July unfortunately as that's the first time I can get to my boat.

When I bought my system the vendor didn't have a ZG100 in stock but said the Point-1 was identical. He was almost correct. The exception being when I connect my TP22 to the network to use wind mode the Point-1 goes silent and heading comes from the TP22. Until the TP22 is in STBY mode. Then I have no heading and have to reset the whole network!!!

Hence the steady cast which should stay online and as such the TP22 should use heading from the network rather than it's own heading data.

Time will tell.

I would still go through the ‘source’ list and check everyt is set to ‘network’. Autosearch sometimes misses or mischooses something.

You should be able to obtain TWA relative to the bow without STW or heading on a B&G chartplotter using the following instructions:

“System”
“Advanced”
“Instruments”
“Advanced settings”

Then tick the box: “Use SOG as boat speed”

I had a Steady cast on my previous boat and it worked well with the B&G.

Well I sorted it all out, just took an hour of digging around in the settings.

Turns out that deep in the advanced section of the settings, there are options for calculating true wind from SOG and COG. I selected both and now I'm seeing what I expected. Seems that the sail steer overlay on the map only displays true wind, which is why it had nothing showing.

I also found out that LOG distance wasn't where the DST810 was providing the data, that was on another data source called water distance that doesn't show up at all on the source configuration page!

I probably don't need the compass, although it might still be worth considering the Steadycast, I'll have to see how well this works now.

Thank you. I think I was digging this out as you wrote this :D

Is there a difference to using COG instead or both as I've selected?

With no heading sensor, using COG as heading is sensible.

Using COG rather than heading has limitations such as when stationary COG will become random rather than reflecting the direction of the bow. There will also be an error with significant current and leeway. However, providing you are aware of the limitations the display is still useful.

Using SOG to calculate “true wind” (strictly speaking this should then be termed water wind) is different. I think this is arguably a better choice that using STW for a cruising boat even if you have a working paddle wheel.

So you might like to leave the option of “Use SOG “ selected even if you solve the issue with the STW sensor. But if you do purcase a heading sensor in the future deselect the option of “use COG” as a proper heading setting is far superior to using COG.

I thought I'd update this to say that B&G support got back to me with this same answer this morning, so my initial sceptical view was unfounded. The do have to sort out their support channels though - if they can't find a ticket that I've got a reference number for that was created through their own app and I have to rely on tweeting them to get a response, it's not good.

Thanks for the input from everyone though - proof the community knowledge is usually the best source of answers.

Good you have sorted it out and thanks for posting the solutions to the Forum, it may be useful in the future (or now) Mr Angry needs some help.

I would suggest using the supplier as the first point of reference. As I, and others, have said Navico are usually faultless with support - but different offices will have different reactions.

As a complete aside it appears Navico have just, or recently, been purchased by Brunswick

Our Company

whom you all know of directly or indirectly

this is specifically about the acquisition

Brunswick to Acquire Navico; Will Enhance Leadership Position in Marine Technology and Strengthen Global Parts & Accessories Business
