B&G network wind instruments

No need yet to change ap!

If you look deep into the user manual you can over ride the data used for the network autopilot speed input.
The factory default speed input is to use the log input. If your log has failed or become fouled you can set 3 different manual speeds which allow the AP to work without a working log.

I think it is also possible to use a gps sog input but this requires a gps input is wired into the network pilot. That is a whole new world of pain that I have not explored yet!

I find going astern flat out usually clears my blocked log impeller quicker than me getting the manual out and fiddling with the AP set up!
That’s useful info I have to look into that .

Hi just on the off chance would one of you kind gent wouldn’t have a B&G network mast head sender laying around ,
I’m having problem with mine ,
another yacht man is leading me a display unit to try out but if that’s not the problem I’m guess it the mast head or wiring .
Which MHU do you have, I think the old B&G Network system used two different MHU's, the 496 and the 213.
496 is the older one, but I'm pretty sure that parts for the 213 are interchangable with the 496, and the 213 unit is still available.
There is a used 213 MHU on ebay at the moment for around £150

A multimeter would not be able to measure the NMEA data that is the heading/speed info from the mast head.

It's already encoded to NMEA 0183/2000 before it comes down the mast. You'd be hard pushed to interpret the data even with an oscilloscope.

The multimeter can check the 12v supply voltage and the impedance of the terminator resistor (should be 120 ohm) on the data pair but it won't be any use apart from that.

Even at component level (ie wind instrument opened up on the bench) the multimeter only good for basic continuity/power checks. Anything else needs a scope and data (NMEA) analyser.
The B&G kit must work in a different way to Garmin's. Where the data comes down to a black box before going onto the NMEA network.
