My boat has an ancient (late 80s) B&G Hecta depth sounder. It generally works perfectly, but has developed an annoying habit of cutting out (no display, no repeater display) when the depth falls below 10m or so. Switching off and on again gives a plausible reading for a couple of seconds, then off it goes again. Returning to deeper water gets a reading back without restarting.
Anyone got any bright ideas? The transducer is mounted in a tube in the hull and is immersed in oil. It looks to me as if the thing is having difficultly coping with the stronger return signals from shallower water. I have a spare transducer and main box, but they are a long way away and I can't get them for this three-week trip.
