Hi all a few people have posted their intention to do the Azores challenge in 2012 within other postings.

I thought it would be nice to gather and introduce ourselves n one posting so others could find out who else intends going.

I should have stated the ball rolling by introducing myself. I intend to do the Azores run as part of my 50th birthday celebration (birth day in March).

http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/privateer20/photos/album/349288556/pic/list (you may need to cut and paste the link as one line) the link has photos of my boat Black Pig hence my log in name. She is a Gaff cutter 20feet. I'm based in Cumbernauld between Glasgow and Stirling. I have recently moved up from dinghy Cruising, due to my son starting to come on the water with us. I would be glad to meet up and find out ways of preparing the boat for the trip.

Few responses but I know quite a few people who are thinking of going. I think there is a commitment issue here.

There seems to be at least 2 styles of decision making:

1) People say that they are going and may or may not make it.
2) People wait until they are sure (and it is a long way off) and then declare their intention (and may or may not make it).

This is a reflection of personal decision making style and seems to have no effect on whether they actualy start.

I took the latter approach for JAC08. After I had decided, I told everyone so that I couldn't back out. I call this the Donald Crowhurst Motivation Management Strategy. (DCMMS)

I have decided that I am unable to go to the USA on JC10. However, one participant suggested that I say I was going, and that I could always back out at the last minute... I know what your game is!

So its a bit early Black Pig.

However, there are the occasional Jester gatherings dotted through the year. Try to get to those.

I don't think there is a entrant's list for 2012 yet.

Suffering from tunnel vision myself I can't see beyond 2010. I know after 2006 there was concern that I wouldn't nominate for the JAC08 until I had completed JC06.

I intend to be at the start of JAC 2012 and God willing be at the finish line too!

I too will be clebrating my 50th in 2012 (April) and thought it would save a bit on drinks if I had my party on the way to the Azores. SWMBO is 'happy' I am sailing off but did mention something about looking for the life policies.

Unless I win loads on the lottery and am able to buy a Vancouver 28 in time I will be sailing in my trusty boat Flipper - 27' long fin 70's style sloop - that I have owned, sailed and been gradually dismantling for 5 years now. I am very good at getting things apart but sometimes struggle to get them to go back again.

Flipper is in Brightlingsea, Essex and I am in Norfolk. I think I am fortunate to know Alan (CPD or is it now Mr Tinkles /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) who I blame totally for my irrational and out of character bravado in going for this event. I know that the Crowhurst approach is the only one for me so I am telling everyone (loud & often!) so I cannot back out.

Peter

Crowhurst had hefty financial sponsorship and therefore........

......couldn't back out without leaving himself and his family bankrupt!

I suggest you put your name forward and refuse all outside financial assistance.

Being a 2008 retiree I'm planning to attempt it again. It's gnawing at me to such an extent that short of some devastating blow I will be there.

Hey, what Noddy said.

You made the start, massive part of it. Now you can relax and prepare with plenty of time. You know what it’s all about
You lucky bugger !
Best Regards

At the last Jester Dinner George Jepps declared his intention to go to the Azores in 2010 (single handed), departing shortly after the JC's going to the USA.

So you could do a JAC10

My half-baked plan at the moment is to head for the start of JC2010 as a kind of 'shake down' sail... see everyone off on their merry way, and then try and get back to the Solent in one piece. If that works then I'll think about 2012! BTW... 1) would any Jesterites have any objections to folk joining in the pre-challenge build up in Plymouth in 2010, even if they're not planning on actually going across the pond this time (I'd be happy to take 2 or 3 relatives out to the start line if I'm there)? 2) are there any Jesterites in the Solent area interested in meeting up every now and then a la the East Coast gang?

You so clearly haven't read any of the rules at all, have you !!!!!. Its just not allowed. How can it be ? Really ..... some people .........

Only a few more clauses and sub-paragraphs and you would have got to section 135, devoted to beer purchasing.

I'm another of the (antenatal) class of 62 intending to celebrate their half centuries on JAC2012.
My single handed experience thus far is limited to dinghies and a particularly messy attempt to tie up the worlds worst handling 8 meter yacht in the worlds worst marina box. Good thing there are 3 more seasons to practice!

Ah Peter. Its good to watch you shaking off the shackles of conventional thinking. Surveyors: Kill 'em all! And insurers. lawyers. Journalists - don't get me started on journalists.

Ellen Macarthur said that the hardest part was getting to the starting line. I think she was right.

All is not lost pm sent!
