It say's in the rules "The race is open to sea worthy mono-hull yachts with a length overall (LOA) from 9m (29.7ft) to 18.5m (61ft) sailed either single-handed or two-handed. The LOA measurement shall be the length overall of the hull excluding attachments." Based in this you can't enter a Twister 28, one if the most seaworthy yachts going. Any ideas why this might be ? Thanks Badger

Dunno,

Twisters have regularly entered in the past. Maybe there's special dispensation?

"A good part of the fleet always consists of standard production yachts, and in 1991 one of the three Challenge Trophies went to Corkscrew a 28ft Twister sailed by OCC member Trevor Leek."

That's fine if ...........

you want to sail single handed and do a transatlanic but it still doesn't explain the AZAB length restiction ? Thanks.

Badger,
I suggest you contact the organisers directly I have found them most approachable. I guess they have to draw a line in the sand somewhere but given the type of boat you are suggesting for the trip I would be surprised if they said no, especially as you have to do a 500mile qualifier before the race, that should give you an indication as to the suitability of the boat for your needs and that of the trip.

I don't know, but I suspect it may be something to do with the timing. Smaller boats take longer and so the faster boats will need to hang around in port longer before starting the return trip.

However it wouldn't be beyond the wit of man to add a short bowsprit to the twister to make it 9m - or even borrow Premier Marina's tape measure that seems to be able to add at least 12 inches onto any boat :)

That didn't work for the OSTAR, my understanding is there's a Twister owner out there who tried just that I believe, and the organisers didn't allow it.

Correct. The rules say 9m excluding attachments. As others have said, its partly on the grounds of safety, and a line has to be drawn somewhere, and partly because of timing and the need to restart from Punta Delgarda a reasonable time after the first boats arrive.

There is a Jester Azores race but it is singlehanded
