Axiom prop - any experience here?

I'm nervous about the new technology even if the Tull soundtrack on their video is like totally their best song evvvvver.

The album "Stand Up" is one of my regular plays in the car when SWMBO is not alongside! I never owned it back in the 70's but I started a thread in The Lounge earlier this year where I asked people to nominate their top 5 albums of all time. As I result of that thread alone I ended up with around a dozen new CD and every one is a masterpiece which has stood the test of time. :)

It's outstanding isn't it

It was very soon after they came out and they didn't perform as expected.

Thanks for that helpful clarification. There was a first gen version that has been replaced but to be honest the lack of ringing endorsements for users here speaks volumes. They need some passionate and knowledgable early adopters - hmmmmm

You in case others get confused, the Axiom is not a folding prop, but has fixed blades to a unique design, developed for canal boats.

I'm open to correction, but I think the idea of the Axiom is it uses a symmetrical design so that the shape is the same whether it's going in forward or reverse. That seems to mean that it has a (gentle) reverse camber, or reflex, across the back half of the profile, whichever way it's going.

The only other place I have come across reflexed aerofoils is in tailless gliders like the Fauvel series, which use it to make the wing stable in pitch. It does that effectively, but at the cost of more drag.

I presume that the Axiom design has something going for it, but I suspect that it may best suit people who spend a lot of time in reverse.

(I'm planning to reprop this winter, but I haven't really considered an Axiom. The front runner was a Darglow Featherstream until this week, when I discovered that the chap who will fit it has fitted a Brunton Autoprop to a similar boat, with a small rudder modification, and says it works beautifully.)

The Featherstream also has the same blade profile forward and reverse, and the ability to have different pitch in reverse. Very different animal from a Bruntons which is at its best if you spend a lot of time motorsailing at as the infinitely variable pitch means the engine is always loaded. So popular with med cruisers where a lot of passages are in light airs using engine assistance.

Yes, but that's because it use the same leading and trailing edges in reverse. I haven't looked at one closely enough to check, but I think the aerofoil section may be symmetrical, though perhaps there is a little camber and that's why they use a different pitch in reverse.

Does not have to be different pitch, just that the choice is there. I had a steeper reverse pitch on mine because I have a 15" so shallow pitch in forwards and steeper reverse for low speed stopping power. Eeked the most out of the meagre 1GM power!
