Hi

I have just bought an Avon 2.6 metre rib, to potter about with. It is scruffy but sound.

BUT, the rowlocks leave dirty black marks every time you touch them. I guess this is due to UV degradation?

Has any one any bright ideas on how to treat them to at least on a temporary basis?

I have considered the paint you can get for tyres, but am not sure that would be effective.

Thanks in Anticipation.

Ian

Whilst the dinghy itself is Hypalon, I suspect the rowlocks are rubber.

Pretty sure they are.

From Polymarine's website "Avon Type Rowlock, Black or Grey * Moulded in high quality rubber * Bonded to Hypalon tube with 2 part 2990 adhesive "

rubber shouldn't leave a mark - maybe you just need to 'scrape' teh degraded stuff off until you get to a harder surface. i too have an elderly avon and the rubbber bits don't leave a mark. are you sure that no-one has has the same idea and painted them with tyre black or similar in the past and therfore created the problem?
