I have had several parts of my R250 outside fendering coming adrift from the dinghy. Aparent when folding it. I decided to remove nearly all of it and re glue it. Trying to remove the glue left behind, is worse than removing antifouling!! Tried using heat with no success, so used several very small amounts of brush applied Toluene solvent. ( need to be very very careful as it desolves the seams if applied too liberally). A carbide scraper very gently to get the thick glue off, (also care needed not to punture tubes) and 60 grit allumimium oxide sand paper to remove whats left. Could only do 100mm at a time before solvent evaporated. Dinghy was blown up so solvent wouldn't lay on surface.
When purchasing the adhesive they said because the fendering had yellow on it, it was PVC ? If PVC, I needed to also buy PVC adhesive prior to coating with hypalon glue, to use it as a primer. I'm not completely convinced it is PVC as it feels like rubber and is heavy when coiled up. The inserts might be PVC but the whole of the outside fendering against the tube feels like rubber to me?
Can anybody tell me with any certainty what the fendering around the outside of an avon R250 is made of please, rubber or PVC ?
The dinghy is grey hypalon, with a fender that is grey but with 2 yellow strip inserts in the middle of the outside moulding.
With taking so much effort and time into the prep for this repair, I just don't want to balls it up.
Thanks for any replies, and hope the info in regards to glue removal is useful to anyone who is contemplating glue removal from hypalon?
Sorry for the long post
Cheers Philip
