Avon Jet rib

Re: Avon Jet rib satisfied customer

Hmm. You will fit but it will be tight. Of course you dont do long journeys in these things, just quick buzzes about, so you will be ok if sitting a bit sideways, but you will have to skew your legs sideways as not enough knee room. I'm 5 foot 11ish and I fit fine, but any taller and you will have limited leg room. Best to try one if you can. The DL is just more comfortable etc for passengers

Yes I can see the pillion might steer better because you can lean. however I think your body weight is better aft. The engine is in the middle on both models, that's enuf weight in the middle, any more weight needs to be aft to improve top speed and get more hull airborn imho.

Re: Avon Jet rib satisfied customer

Disagree about the weight - in fact according to Avon the pillion model is faster than the DL model by about 5 mph ... so the figures support my case:-)

12. Very quick to launch. Press the passerelle buttons and unclip 3 strops and go. No fuel bulb to squeeze, no outboard leg to lower, etc. Very convenient

Same goes with us except we just press a button and the platform lowers into the water gently floating the rib. NICE!!!

Re: Avon Jet rib satisfied customer

Hi all,

I just got mine and I am extremely happy besides the shifting from reverse problem and the fact that it doesn't have a real neutral.
I just managed to suck in a ski rope - a real mess! Just like jfm warned - unfortunately I didn't read the posts here yet. Thinking I should be able to start the boat in neutral I made things even worse. Well now the motor won't start at alll Maybe the starting motor is dead?
I guess the shifting form reverse is a universal problem with every Avon 320 jet. I have to try the Steering colum in neutral trick - would be a great help.

THIS BOAT is great for jumping in waves! Managed top flip it over in a big wave - and the Avon righted itself ( might have been a lot of luck and not by design :-) )

If you're over 6'1" I wouldn't recommend it unless you're only planning on short trips.

but the short trips will be a lot of fun!

Enjoy

PS JFM you happen to find anything out about tuning kits? Is the engine the same as in the Yamaha waverunner XL700 jetski?

Re: Against jetribs tho

i have a jetrib. I didn't kno the stupid water cannon trick, which sounds great. I will have to nip round and have a crack at jfm with 175hp water cannon, heehee. I wd also like him to show me the lunatic flat spin trick, before me trying it

anyways, against the jet rib is ....it is "all one thing", instead of conventional rib+outboard. Most of the drawbacks follow from this. You have one gurt big thing that needs to be craned in and out - no chance of lifting by hand, too heavy. Prob with crane? - jetrib in the water overnight which is no good for it. Want a service? The guy has to turn up with a lorry with crane thingy to take it away. Engine bustified? The whole thing has had it then, it's not just a new outboard.

The pros that jfm descirbe arise out of the fact that he is in south france, so can have warm-watery fun, falling in and so on. If not in the med, then the thing is needed as an actual tender and it's a poor choice imho. Also, it's sodding white so looks old quickly.

Re: Avon Jet rib satisfied customer

Hi. Yes, you gotta remeber there is no neutral. It sucks water in the whole time, the impeller is always turning. "neutral" is just the bucket. So it has sucked in your skirope and it is all wound and melted round the impeller. That's why it wont startt, the engine is seized solid. Needs to be lifted onto a stand and all the ski rope hacksawed away. Then will be fine.

I dunno about tuning kits but I guess there must be some because it is the Yam waverunner engine, so the jetski guys must have tuning gear. Need to google for a forum. You can't chip it becos not electronic. I want to get another 30-40bhp (with massive reduction in engine life, but I dont care) else really wont notice a difference. That probly means a big modification like a turbo. But it's a 2-stroke dang

The other thing I am contemplating is buying a whole new jet rib and getting a mod shop (a la West Coast Customs - pimp your car) to install a bigger motor like the merc 175 jet that tcm has. Or just a 125 outboard powerhead - that would just need them to make some custom mounts, plus a bit to connect to the drive shaft, and maybe a coarser impeller, eezy peezy really for a decent modding shop/machine shop
