I have recently purchased an avon 310 rib as a tender/runabout ,mostly for inland water use,and would like some opinions as to what size/make of outboard would be most suitable??

15hp, if not a 10hp.
I have a 9.9hp on the same RIB, No1 Moose can get 22kt's out of it. I can get about 18kt's, still very scary and very fun!!!/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I am having to put a 4HP on mine, I know it will be under-powered but that is the rule on Windermere if you want under 16 years to be able to drive it.

Everybody always tells me Yamaha are the best built outboards, most expensive mind and I am sure know I have said this hundreds will disagree

Sorry, I have an Evinruide which is great, it is quiet, no smoke, doesn't burn much fuel unless No1 gets his hands on it. I think they are all the same block anyway (10hp block is the same as a 15hp)

I have thought of this, and my brother could do me the new logo's without a problem, but I was told that the lake wardens are switched onto this.

How difficult is it to tell between a 4HP and say an 8 or 10HP?? Isn't the 8 or 10 alot bigger??

I have the same RIB wth Yamaha 15, it is fast when lightly loaded and is better with steering wheel. A 9.9 would probly be pretty ok. A 5 or 6 would push it along but it might not plane unless just one small child on board

The yam 15 is an outstandingly good motor by the way. Incredibly quiet and smooth idle. You have to listen hard to check if it's running, as good as a 4 stroke but smaller and lighter

Not sure, you are only breaking the by-law of the lake, not the land if you know what i mean, some places will let any age drive so i dont think the insurance will be affected, but I would look into it very closely.

I have heard of other people dont this and if any questions are asked they said it was an import hence bigger, but still some back to the question of how easy is it to tell the HP of an engine?

I've got one with a Mercury 15HP, but tiller control. Great fun (22kts one up) but a bit hairy. I've had it on the plane on a lake 4 up, does about 18-20 knts, much more stable.
2 up , ie with good weight dsitrubution it's great. You can get wet in choppy water though.
If you use the tubes to sit on, then you have to clean them well as you can get a black rear end.
All in all, I like it, but as other suggest, a centre console is probably better, but of course cuts down your carrying capacity.

I'm not up to date on exact pricing but sounds good. That is same engine as 15hp, and as I said you will be amazed how smooth/quiet the motor idles and runs. You can hardly hear it running at idle. We bort ours in 2002, I cant remeber the price.
