I am thinking of getting a combined depth/log instrument but do not want to drill a hole through an otherwise watertight hull. what would be the problem of using a transom mounted log sensor as sold for power boats. My boat is only a 17' trailer sailor and currently has no through hull fittings.

You should be fine using one.. They are designed for small motor boats with outboard engines.

Bear in mind when siteing it that turbulence disturbs tdepth soundings and that when heeling the the sender needs to stay under water.
