Averaging Filter on a GPS

My handheld garmin 72 seemed to be updating the course over ground and speed every couple of seconds .I have gone into the menu and reset the average filter to 15 seconds to damp it down a bit.Is there a recommended averaging time?

Won't the damping depend on the application? A jetski doing blindfold slalom in fog would want much shorter time than a sailboat in a big cross swell.

I seem to do more of the sailing in a cross sea than the blind jet ski slaloming

Now I have read the manual its fairly easy to alter it so will just try it and see how it goes.
