Av. Chandlery Spend (uni dissertation research)

Simple answer is "TOO MUCH" due to high price. Moved to buy online or non marine.
Only buy the small odds n ends at about 10 GBP per trip and go there perhaps twice a month.

I know we joke about the chandlery costs - but our smallish local one here in Brighton undercuts all the big internet sites and other larger outlets.

I agree that the word "marine" adds a few noughts and Maplin and Screwfix on line provide a cheaper product - which is fine for when you know what you want, but I trust the people in the Marina and because they now know me they do me a favour everynow and again.

bits and bobs <10 quid - local chandlers, local hardware shop
items to solve more complex issues where I take advice - chandlers
Items where where it is obvious what you are getting / price sensitive due to high cost - online

Other observations:
Online shops are a useful price / spec benchmark even if you don't buy from them.

I have been surprised that e-bay has a fair number of boats for sale but in my view has relatively few new chandlery items being sold new from one man and his dog outfits. I have recently bought some shackles on e-bay from a scuba e-bay shop, not too many chandlery equivalents.

By chance im fitting out a Folkboat. As its winter and quite i go along to the shops and look around, then ask for advise,i know the shops very well, and there as helpful as they can be.

I then look online to find out more, for example GPS Depth sounder cooker, and while i was at it items for another boat.

Most shops dont really understand the products their selling, when it comes to electronics.

The biggest shock is that online many sites are really bad first to find the product then to choose the item then to find the price, To compare 3 or 4 products takes for ever

Then the price online is more expensive than the Shops!! Buy a Garmin72 for just £168! good less than a shop in Kiel Zurich Milan or Paris go to pay, tax and postage extra total cost £212 or up to 10% more than a shop inc postage

I found one uk online shop charging £4 England £47 Irland! I expect i can find it again to post as an example.

As i sail wooden boats most of my costs are for paint varnish sandpaper etc. Tomorow i will buy a "bosh" heat gun £70 and i could do with a new sander that will cost about the same or a bit moore first i have to find a good one, which is becomeing harder.

Then when the snow goes?? i will order an auto pilot in France from a shop a simrad TP10 as in the uk online just the unit costs more!

My links are scatterd over 2 laptops and a PDA i have to rearrange as a firefox update removed allmy extentions
