Following on from Marks recent post entitled 'Is an Outboard necessary?'

I have been thinking about this since getting my current boat, and have decided that I do want to add an auxiliary outboard over the winter in readiness for next year.

A lot of this is driven by the fact that we will have two young grandchildren starting to come out with us next year, and safety is highlited even more.

We have a Bayliner 192 Classic Cuddy, which is 19 feet long, with a Merc 3.0L + Alpha Gen1.

The swim platform on this boat is not full width, so adding a bracket to the transome should be relatively easy.

Has anyone added an auxiliary outboard to a 'sports boat' of this size? Does anyone have any advice on do's and don'ts, engine size etc etc?

Assuming you're going with a small motor - a standard drop-down bracket should be ok - you can get them up to 15hp.

I recommend a long-shaft as an auxiliary as the prop will be lower in the water - get a sailpower / hi-thrust type if possible - they are much better.

You might want to have a look on the Bayliner owners forum site, as I know there are a few who have added auxiliary outboards, and so you'll probably find a lot of information.
