I have had for ten years a very successful below deck autopilot which has an hydraulic drive, since fitting new steering cables my steering has been a great deal improved. But I had reason to disconnect the drive from the quadrant, and I was amazed how free the wheel turned. I suppose that when in standby the oil still creates some drag when turning the wheel. I am now wondering if an electric drive would create less drag when disengaged, I should add that I have been quite happy with the helm for many years but having disconnected the drive the wheel is so free.
