Border Maid is equipped with an ST50 Tridata display and depth/log transducers. The display on the Tridata is badly faded and at night is more or less useless. Whenever I talk to marine electronic suppliers they seem to want to sell me some much more elaborate (which I do not need) and expensive (and cannot really afford) piece of equipment. Am I right in thinking I could simply connect my existing transducers to an ST40 Bidata display at only just over £100?

Airmar have a very handy resource on their website which shows applications for their transducers. Through it I found the tridata transducer in my hull was totally incompatable with a Stowe head instrument which had been fitted. I bought an Ebay ST 50.
If you look on the transducer cable about a metre from the skin fitting you might be lucky to find a small white label which will give you the transducer type.

ST60 Tridata:

Works on my ST50 senders, I use 2, one at the Nav desk and a second on the wheel, both are repeaters from the main coach roof Speed & Depth ST50 instruments.

Absolutely no problems and ST60 tridata’s appear reasonably frequently on eBay for about £100. The visual clarity both day and night is another world compared to the ST50’s

Have fun.... Peter
