Having reread this, I thought I should finish it off with the solution.
Scott at Raymarine very kindly sent me an exploded diagram of the drive which made it clear that I had put the 4 planetary gears on upside down. Corrected this and it now works fine.
"Raised flange on planetary gear should face driven gear, (and the driving rod), on reassembly).
So there you have it... I had a 50/50 chance of getting this right when I fitted the new gears in Bayona, and I got it wrong. Should have taken some detailed photos of it whilst dissassebling, but not my first thought in the middle of Biscay.
