I've recently aquired an Autohelm 2000 ram (old compass type model) which I was hoping to use as a spares to repair an broken 4000 type tillerpilot ram. They're totally different (sizes, motor, bushes etc) so I'm hoping this will work and I can use it as a spare unit.

It has 3 wires going to a board (with a resistor) which is then soldered the motor. I've not had chance to have a proper look at the board to see whats happening but I'm assuming I can remove the board and feed the motor with 2 wires as the 4000 ram is?

I've done a search for diagrams but can't actually find links that work. Or can anyone remember why the ram had 3 wires.
